And the Oscar goes to ... the Beatles: the night the Fab Four won an Academy Award

Above, Quincy Jones accepts the Oscar for the Beatles for "Let It Be" in 1971.

Oscar night hasn't been the best night for the Beatles, but they do have one Oscar win in the books.

In 1970, their movie "Let It Be" won Best Original Song Score. The films they beat out were "Scrooge," "The Baby Maker," "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and "Darling Lili."

But they were also nominated for a few Oscars they didn't win. In 1964, "A Hard Day's Night" received two Oscar nominations, but won neither. It was nominated for Best Story and Screenplay Written Directly For the Screen (Walter Shenson and Alun Owen), but lost to "Father Goose." It was also nominated for "Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment" (Walter Shenson and George Martin), but lost to "My Fair Lady."

In 1973, Paul McCartney's theme for "Live and Let Die" was nominated for Best Song, but lost to Barbra Streisand's "The Way They Were." And in 2002, Paul McCartney's "Vanilla Sky," Best Original Song, Paul McCartney, "Vanilla Sky" lost out as Best Original Song to "If I Didn't Have You" by Randy Newman from the Disney film "Monsters, Inc."

I have a memory of a photo of Paul holding his Oscar for LIB. He and Linda were cornered by a crush of paparzzi, and I remember Paul allegedly lost his cool. So did Quincy accept and then give Paul's statue to him offstage? Wha' hoppen'?
