12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Offenses occur each day and without warning. People can offend without meaning to hurt or upset anyone. Also, there are those who do evil that is stored in their hearts. It does not matter intentional or unintentional. Debts are something owed. A wrong action will incur a debt to the person wronged. How should a believer respond? God calls believers in Jesus Christ to forgive.
Forgiveness is the release of the debt owed. First of all most people want their debt wiped out. Jesus taught that believers should release others of the offenses against them. They would experience God’s forgiveness at the same time. The Holy Spirit is the Helper and Counselor facilitating this act of love. Forgiveness does not happen automatically. It is a decision of the will. It is a key to your forgiveness.
Challenge: Believer, practice forgiveness, releasing others from their debt, and know that God does the same for you!
