Anchorage Shooter has Distinctive Tattoos

Police in Anchorage, Alaska responded to shots being fired from a hotel room. Jason Barnum was arraigned Friday and charged with attempted murder and assault charges, along with possessing an illegal fire arm. Barnum is a known heroin addict, and this could have been a factor in the incident.

One startling thing when shown pictures of Barnum is his distinct tattoo work. He has a skull and bones tattooed on side of his face; most startling is that one of his eyes is tattooed.

Scleral tattooing is the practice of adding ink to the white part of the eye, changing the color. The practice arose in 2007, and gained some headlines when prison inmates were getting the tattoos done. The procedure is done by injecting the ink into the eye with a syringe instead of a needle. While there are few nerve endings making the procedure relatively painless, the after effects can include discomfort, blistering, bruising, and completions such as infection. The procedure is still in experimental phases, and it is urged not to have the procedure done by anyone but a trained professional. In 2009 the state of Oklahoma passed a law making sclera tattoos illegal.
