Looks like the women have had their run in regards to possession supernatural films and I think we all can agree they need a break. For decades we have seen women of a fair toned skin and split end filled hairs haunt our dreams. All one seems to need these days is a farmhouse and dirty white nightgown and you would have encompassed all the exorcism films of the past few decades. Well in steps Anchor Bay looking to release the new film from David Jung THE POSSESSION OF MICHAEL KING in limited theaters August 22nd and VOD on August 28th.

When a young filmmaker has set out to disband the notion that demonic possessions don't exist, then it’s a good thing for us but maybe not so much for him. That’s the story behind a documentary filmmakers journey to prove that not believing in god or the devil allows one not to become possessed. As we all find out that is not the case.

Michael King (Shane Johnson) doesn’t believe in God or The Devil. Following the sudden death of his wife, the documentary filmmaker decides to make his next film about the search for the existence of the supernatural. Michael decides to make himself the center of the experiment - allowing demonologists, necromancers, and various practitioners of the occult to try the deepest and darkest spells and rituals they can find on him - in the hopes that when they fail, he’ll once and for all have proof that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than myth. But something does happen. An evil and horrifying force has taken over Michael King. And it will not let him go. Dale Dickey (IRON MAN 3), Tomas Arana(GLADIATOR), and Julie McNiven (“Mad Men”) co-star in this intense supernatural spine-tingler from the producers of WHITE NOISE and THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT.

The Possession sounds very familiar to the opening of The Last Exorcism with a slight twist. Hopefully for the filmmaker and Anchor Bay it will garner the same response. It begs the question on if the genre audience is finished with these types of supernatural films. Outside of a few, most have been reduced to CG laced cash grabs that end up sitting on the shelves from some time. The idea of religion and demons is still one of the scariest topics in horror. A lack of solid films that cater to these ideas has hurt the credibility and have been repeatedly mocked as of late. Hopefully THE POSSESSION OF MICHAEL KING can restore some substance to the sub genre. Enjoy the image for the film and look a review closer to the release.

THE POSSESSION OF MICHAEL KING is directed by David Jung and stars Shane Johnson, Ella Anderson, Cara Pifko, Dale Dickey, Julie McNiven, and Tomas Arana. It will be released in theaters on August 22nd followed by a VOD release on August 28th courtesy of Anchor Bay Films.
