This is the fifth article in the genealogy project, "52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks."

Maria de los Angeles Gonzalez is a paternal third great-grandmother. She was born in Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico in 1812. Maria was baptized at Inmaculada Concepción Church in Mier on Aug. 5, 1812. She was the daughter of Jose Vicente Gonzalez and Maria Petra del Refugio Ramos and both parents’ families had lived in Mexico for several hundred years.

Little did Maria or her family know they were descended from Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine and her husband, King Henry II.

A researcher who specializes in Spanish genealogy has found 90 ways to connect this writer to Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Maria de los Angeles Gonzalez is just one path to get there.

Maria had seven siblings, and the Gonzalez family was part of a large group of ancestors descended from Spaniards who left Europe for Nuevo Espana, later called Mexico, in the 16th century. Many of those Spaniards were descended from royalty.

Maria married Jose Manuel Marcelino Flores Nov. 17, 1830 at the same church in Mier where she and her husband were baptized.

No death records have been found for Maria. It is likely she died in Mier, but her daughter, Antonia Flores, was the ancestor who left Mexico for Texas and married Captain Jack Ross Everett.
