Antonio Garcia de Sosa is a maternal ninth great-grandfather. He was baptized June 6, 1680 at a Catholic church in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. His parents were Don Pedro Garcia (de Sosa) and Elena Garza Guerra. Garcia de Sosa’s baptism record states his godparents were Captain Juan Cavazos and Clara de la Garza.
Garcia de Sosa, who is also known as Antonio Garcia Guerra, was one of six children. He had four brothers and one sister. One brother was baptized in 1683, another baptized in 1689, and a third baptized in 1696. There is one brother for whom there is no birth or baptism record, nor is there a record for his sister. It appears Antonio was the oldest, but without the birth information for the other two siblings, it is not certain who was oldest.
Garcia de Sosa grew up during Spain’s colonial reign over Mexico. The country was actually referred to as Nueva Espana, or New Spain, by the Spanish. Monterrey was officially called Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey, or "Metropolitan City of Our Lady of Monterrey.”
Not much is known at this time about Garcia de Sosa’s early life. On April 30, 1699, he married Nicolasa Garza Falcon in Monterrey. She was the daughter of Captain Blas Garza and Margarita Lopez Prieto.
Garcia de Sosa is referred to as captain later in life, much like his godfather and his father-in-law. They could have been Conquistadors, leaders of militias, or other Spanish military leaders.
Garcia de Sosa and his wife had seven children, four girls and three boys. At this time, there is a baptism record for only one child, born in 1708. There are marriage records for three children. They married in 1721, 1731, and 1737. Daughter Maria Gertrudis Garcia Guerra married in 1721. She is the direct descendant leading down the maternal line and is an eighth great-grandmother.
There is no death information for Antonio Garcia de Sosa, nor is there death information for his wife. Nothing is known about them after the birth of their children.
