This is the 29th article in the genealogy project “52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.”

Jose Cayetano Ramos is a paternal fourth great-grandfather. He was the son of Jose Francisco Ramos and Maria Gertrudis Hinojosa. Jose Cayetano was baptized Sept. 7, 1775 at Inmaculada Concepcion Catholic Church in Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The baptism record states the family was from Mier. Jose Cayetano was the second of 12 children born between 1772 and 1800. He had five brothers and six sisters.

There is no marriage document for Jose Cayetano and his wife Maria Dorotea Gonzalez, but records for their six children provide clues about when they may have married.

The earliest baptism record for a child of Jose Cayetano is for his daughter, Maria Geronima Ramos. She was baptized September 1795. If Jose Cayetano was baptized September 1775, then he was about 20 when this daughter was baptized.

He and his wife baptized subsequent children in 1800, 1802, and 1805. Another daughter, Maria Segunda Ramos, married in June 1813 and her marriage record states she was 18 at the time. There is no birth record for her. This places her birth year as 1795. Either Maria Segunda and Maria Geronima were twins, or their mother experienced back-to-back pregnancies, or the marriage license information was incorrect.

There is another Maria Ramos who married in November 1812, but there is no age information for her, so there is no way to know her birth order.

All the information for Jose Cayetano’s children points to him marrying by age 19 or 20, if not earlier. All the children were baptized in Mier, so it is likely Jose Cayetano and his wife married in the same Mier church where they were baptized. Jose Cayetano’s wife, Maria Dorotea, was baptized in 1770, which made her about five years older than him.

A fairly reliable timeline for Jose Cayetano can be constructed based on records and clues. He was born in Mier, baptized in Mier in 1775, married in 1794 or 1975 in Mier, and lived in Mier with his wife and children at least until the baptism of his last child.

There are no other records for Jose Cayetano. The records and clues stop in 1805 with the baptism of his last child when he was 30.
