This is the 19th article in the project, 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.

Maria Ignacia Pena is a maternal great-great grandmother. She was baptized Aug. 5, 1838 at Inmaculada Concepcion Catholic Church in Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Her parents were Jose Cayetano Albino Pena and Maria Anastacia Ysaguirre.

The next available record for Maria Ignacia is for her marriage to Jose Juan Nepomuceno Alanis. They were married May 14, 1860 at the same church where she was baptized in Mier. Her husband had also been baptized there.

Maria Ignacia appears in the 1880 U.S. Cenus as living with her family in Duval County, Texas. She and husband Jose Juan have seven children at the time of the census. They range in age from one year old to 17. Their oldest child, Maria Francisca Pena, was already married by this time. Her occupation is listed as “keeps house.”

By the 1900 census, Maria Ignacia is living with her son, Benito, age 25, and his wife. Maria Ignacia’s husband, Jose Juan, had died around 1900. Her sons Leandro and Severo and their families lived nearby and appear next to her listing in the census.

In the 1910 census, Maria Ignacia is living with her other son, Leandro, and his wife. Also living with them are Benito Alanis and his family, for a total of 10 in the household. Her son, Severo, lived nearby with his family. This census states that Maria Ignacia arrived in Texas in 1880.

Maria Ignacia Pena died in Duval County, Texas, sometime after 1910.
