One market research firm believes that Sony will keep its lead in the next-gen console sales war by pushing out 12 million PlayStation 4 units by the end of 2014, though Microsoft will finish with 9 million Xbox One units sold, according to a report today from VG 24/7.

A report released by analyst firm Wedbush Morgan indicates that a total of 24 million next-gen consoles will be sold by the end of the year –– 12 million PS4 units, 9 million Xbox One units and 3 million Wii U units.

Wedbush Morgan called the PS4 a “phenomenal success right out of the gate,” saying they believe they’ll further their lead in the market with the launch of the next-gen console in Japan later this month.

The firm also said the Xbox One has “achieved great success,” though credits the higher price point for the Microsoft machine as the reason it’s fallen behind Sony’s system.

The figures come just a day after market research firm DFC Intelligence said that both Sony and Microsoft would sell 100 million PS4 and Xbox One units by 2020.
