Analysis: Limo breakdown a fitting metaphor for the Obama presidency

Shortly after arriving in Israel today, President Obama's limo wouldn't start because it was refueled with gasoline instead of diesel. CNN reporter Sara Sidner tweeted, “Not sure what's more embarrassing: #Obama's #limo driver put petrol instead of diesel and it wouldn't start or having to #report it.” The limo sputtered to a stop and had to be towed.

Assuming it wasn't foul play, putting the wrong kind of fuel into that automobile is an act of incompetence by the driver who allegedly fueled the vehicle. This is a fitting metaphor for the presidency of a president who came to the office the least prepared and experienced of any president in the life time of anyone alive today.

Three months into Barack Obama's presidency, he had been slower in making appointment to fill out his administration than any other recent president. Of all the positions needing senate confirmation that the president appoints, Obama had only filled about half of them. Two years into his presidency, there were reported of positions still unfilled.

President Obama made the health care reform, that was later nick-named “ObamaCare,” the centerpiece of his first term in office. Yet the president never offered his own bill or draft or version for the health care reform. He allowed the Congress to do that, and as always the Senate and House divided between supporting their own versions. And then the health care limo almost broke down when the special election in Massachusetts elected Scott Brown as the “41st senator” to defeat ObamaCare. It was only after Harry Reid and the Democrats in the Senate figured out they could abuse the reconciliation process under the Senate's rules, which was created to enact budget and tax legislation, to pass ObamaCare with a simple majority against the threat of a Republican filibuster.

This administration's foreign policy has been one breakdown after another. Obama's policy, or the lack of much policy, on stopping Iran and North Korea from getting the nuclear bomb is a complete failure. The whole Benghazi affair is clearly a breakdown, the administration sat there for hours watching the events unfold, failing to even try to defend our men and women in that consolidate. By the end of the mess, four Americans had needlessly died.

Only once has this administration proposed a federal budget, and they have yet to effectively work with both parties in the Congress to pass a budget. The budgeting process has been a huge breakdown for the entire Obama presidency. Polls show the American public disapproves of how President Obama has handled the budget process and disapproves of the Congress even more. But for all but the last two years, the president's party has control the Congress, and continues to the control the Senate. And while the Republican-controlled House has passed a budget the last two years, the Democratic-controlled Senate has not passed a budget during Barack Obama's presidency. The budget limo is not only broken down, the White House can't even get it started.

Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has a explanation for all of this. Limbaugh says the president has remained in campaign mode and continues to campaign against those who the president blames for causing all the nation's problems. This pattern of remaining in campaign mode rather than governing, and letting others take the blame for his lack of leadership while is he not seen by the public as responsible, is what Rush calls “the Limbaugh Theorem.”

Clearly this president is quite effective in campaigning mode in a way he clearly is not if he has to govern. The campaign they ran last Fall was quite well organized and implemented, as it reelected a president in very tough political and economic environment in which many other candidates might well have lost that election to Mitt Romney.

History will regard Obama's presidency for it's history-making in that he was the first African-American president election but it will regard he served as president during a time in which our politics have been as broken down and inept as the limo was today in Isreal.
