While not actually within the city limits, this lively wetland is surrounded by the light rail, busy roadways, parking areas, commercial development and residences. Far from pristine, containing old barrels, storm pipe, abandoned roadways and other signs of human activity it none the less offers an opportunity to discover nature close to the urban environment.
A raised boardwalk, complete with benches has been constructed to connect the light rail parking area to Robert E Lee Park on the edge of the wetland. This is a popular spot with bird watchers, especially during the warbler migration seasons.
Cattails poke up from the water, sedges and wetland plants that are seldom seen can be spotted right from the boardwalk. Woodpeckers can be heard, hawks can be seen and even an eagle can been sighted overhead. Small streams and standing water offer a variety of experiences and photographic opportunities.
To enjoy this little spot is to understand the importance of the natural environment in enriching our everyday lives.
