Having fly fished the better part of the last 20 years, I've found numerous go-to gear items that have been there for me, proving themselves time and again. One of these standbys would have to be my old Orvis Clearwater wading boots I recently laid to rest after many memories on the water.
Yes, as a writer I get lots of opportunities to try the latest gear, but for the decade I spent in the Clearwater and the times they saved me from a dunking, I can share my experience with fellow anglers and suggest they check out the latest in the Clearwater lineup from Orvis.
The tradition of this lightweight wading boot remains strong, the original reason I grabbed the Clearwater in the first place. As a guy who loves backcountry fishing and appreciates anything that will lighten my load on an outing, the Clearwater filled the bill. This new version is not only lightweight, but also rugged like it's predecessor. The latest Clearwater II features a synthetic upper which resists damage from rocks and debris, while fighting off rot, mildew and damaging sun rays.
As a guy with a bad ankle, another appealing factor is this lightweight boot also offer complete over-the-ankle support and solid construction which could possibly make it your personal fly fishing buddy for years. What makes it so durable? Well, Orvis' polyurethane and high-density nylon mesh give this boot extended life. In the time I wore my old Clearwaters, I went through three pairs of waders. I'll leave the make of the waders out of this review.
Adding to this boots construction and ruggedness is a toe cap and heel counter that are wrapped in textured rubber for additional protection. Orvis still offers a felt version, but has added a PosiGrip screw-in stud system. The new Clearwater II is available in charcoal and tan and in men's sizes from 6 to 14. If you prefer a felt model, you can still find this advanced boot starting below $100. If you'd like to go for a Clearwater II with River Guard and Ecotrax, they'll run about $169. Oh, check out the latest rubber over shoe as well that will help you protect your boat, or better yet, a float plane from possible damage from the studs.
