Nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains, and less than a three hour drive from Los Angeles, Idyllwild has the perfect small-town mountain feel with locally owned restaurants and a friendly community. Perfect for a "day of hiking" in the fresh mountain air and ideal for a peaceful weekend getaway, Idyllwild is southern California’s ideal secret hideaway.
As a native Californian who has lived in both the northern and southern parts of the state, I had thought I knew the states hideaways – but I was wrong. I discovered Idyllwild through the recommendation of a friend, and this is one mountain town that I will continue to frequent.
Named one of the 100 Best Art Town in America by John Villani, the artsy town offers more than just beautiful galleries to peruse. Activities such as hiking, fishing, and mountain biking are all within the realm of possibility. Also, shopping at any of the quaint shops (check out the Spruce Moose if you need any Christmas related decorations!) or sampling beef jerky at House of Jerky, or just an extended brunch while people watching at Café Aroma. Truth be told – my weekend crew (consisting of my husband and dog) enjoyed a “hiking weekend” of completely lazy cabin life. We played games, read our books down by the creek, ordered way too much pizza for two people to consume and relished the quietness of mountain-life.
