When you ask people what they do for a living, they may tell you auto mechanic, banker, realtor or repair tech, for example. What do you do when someone lists their professional occupation as prankster? If that person is Tom Mabe, he's not kidding. He is well known across the globe for his pranks. Some are elaborate ,others are simple.
The best known Tom Mabe incident is when a telemarketer called and Mabe had him think he called a crime scene. "I had that guy thinking he called an active murder investigation", Mabe said, "That one got like 80million views on Youtube before I got my own Youtube Channel." Mabe said.
Most of the time, people are good sports. However, there are times when people do not like getting pranked. Most of Tom's material is clean. However, his most edgy video is one where he has a "small penis parking only" sign and puts it in front of peoples vehicles when they are in a store. On the tape, you can see some people go after him and "One guy really hit me hard", Mabe said.
He never got arrested but he came close. He is based in Kentucky and the local cops are familiar with him. One such stunt was when he dressed as a zoo keeper and had a tape of a lion roaring. He put it in a park and convinced people that a lion had escaped. "I was told the cops wanted to talk tome, when doing this, you cannot instill fear in people or make them afraid. I'm learning that", Mabe laughed.
Some of his pranks cost a couple of dollars to execute. Others, cost thousands. One such pranks was when a friend had multiple DUI's and he was found passed out in a vehicle. Mabe and friends quickly got an empty room and turned it into a hospital room. As the man awoke he was informed he was in a coma for 10 years. A professional newscaster was hired and a newscast was played for the man when he was told "President Hillary Clinton" had done something and a former child star was living in a trailer park. The man was ( hopefully) scared sober.
10 years ago you needed an agent and a deal with a television network to be famous. Not anymore. "I do quite well with doing it by myself, Mabe said. He get paid with subscribers and page views. They are quite funny and for the most part clean. With almost no television exposure, Mabe is becoming famous. "People will recognize me from the videos and I think it's pretty cool", he said.
Some of his pranks are funnier than others. His pranks where he is on a cellphone and challenges the person on the other end to a fight and describes himself as a person standing next to him are classic. Tom dressing up as a Hooters guy is not as good, it's cliche and predictable. Tom's at his best when he lets it flow naturally without a set up. When he called a pizza place and convinced them that an undercover cop in a park was ordering food , is great.
Tom said "I don't really tour and do stand up right now. I am more interested in someplace that I can fly in ,do a show and fly right back out again". He has been in Doylestown Pa. before and hopes to come back at some point. Tom is available for corporate shows . His website will provide more info. However do not call him to sell him anything. He is brutal and hates telemarketers. He even went to a telemarketer convention and booked a room in the hotel they were staying in. He then spent the entire night calling their rooms asking if they would be interested in insomnia medicine.
