An Insurance Salesman enters a client meeting regarding employee wellness...and the most unbelievable thing happened!
Are you tired of seeing marketing like this? Me too. Typically what happens next isn’t that amazing or unbelievable; until now.
An insurance salesman enters a client meeting. The client, XYZ Company is a staple in the local community supporting many local foundations and causes. They employee 50-100 employees at there local office with an additional 100+ employees at satellite offices in the surrounding counties. XYZ Company is interested in keeping their employees healthy. Recently, they’ve been plagued by increased workman's compensation claims and rising insurance costs. XYZ Company cares about their employees, but something needs to change. If insurance costs keep rising, some tough decisions will have to be made.
The Insurance Salesman sympathizes with XYZ company. The rising costs of healthcare have left him very little room to negotiate. He says “Your workforce is unhealthy, they’re high risk and we have no choice but to charge you more”. XYZ Company shudders at the news. “What options do I have?” They ask. Insurance Salesman pauses for a moment and says “Well, we do offer an employee wellness program as part of your insurance package.” XYZ Company is thrilled at this news. They were unaware that their insurance company offered employee wellness programming as part of their benefits package. XYZ Company asks “Whats included in the wellness package?” “Well, we offer complimentary annual biometric screenings and health risk assessments to all of your employees, on a voluntary basis of course. We also offer access to our disease management database and online fitness videos”. XYZ Company sounding less than thrilled then asks “Well, how will those services get my employees to be healthier and lower our insurance costs? The Insurance Salesman smiles to himself and says “exactly”.
Joking aside (hopefully insurance salesman aren’t like this!); Why would an insurance company be interested in keeping a businesses employees as healthy as possible? Insurance companies profit from unhealthy behaviors and the risk associated with them. Having an insurance company administer your wellness program is akin to having a drug dealer administer your rehabilitation program; there are conflicting interests at play.
There are third-party wellness providers available to you and your business; some willing to use local resources(read..Myfitstyle), that want to earn your business and get the results you desire for your organization. Your wellness is our business.
