“The Redskins are at camp. Virginia Tech is at camp. The Christiansburg Blue Demons are at camp.” Christiansburg head football coach Tim Cromer announced to his players as he walked the Blue Demon’s pre-practice stretch lines.
The coach’s statement served as a reminder to anyone within earshot that when the calender turns to August, it’s time for football players to go to work. As many of their classmates are soaking up that few weeks of their summer vacation by hanging out poolside or squeezing in that last trip to the lake, football players are strapping on helmets and taking to dusty field to prepare for their upcoming seasons.
This isn’t some earth-shattering revelation for most folks. They see the guys heading to and from practice. They bump into players coated in that post-practice grim at the store. And they may even hear the occasional whistle being blown in the distance.
But do they really know what these players go through on a daily basis? Do they really understand how many hours, how much effort, and how much sweat these young men are giving up each day to prepare to entertain them on Friday nights?
Well the best way to understand something is to get it straight from the source and recently a few of Christiansburg’s players took the time to do just that, giving me an inside look at what exact a day is like at the Blue Demons’ preseason camp.
