An impossibly romantic Valentine’s Day at the Viceroy Zihuatanejo (Photos)

For years your LA Travel Diva Examiner and her husband Richard fled to a small hotel called Villa del Sol to celebrate special occasions from anniversaries to Valentine’s Day. Located on a once pristine, secluded beach, the property oozed with romance. There was Orlando at the popular palapa bar that bore his name who always remembered your drink and served it generously with a big Mexican-style grin. And there was proprietor Helmut Leins, a German-transplant who fell in love with the area during vacations so much he bought land and built a dream hotel.

The hotel was our little love nest where we lazed on the beach during the day, ate lunch on the beach, sipped margaritas at sunset, dine under the stars at night, slept in a canopied bed, and took early morning and late afternoon swims in the warm bay. Each time we arrived we would find our bed adorned with flowers in the shape of the hear and our washclothes twisted in swans. We're talking romance here folks.

After a couple of visits and several articles penned by Richard in Playboy, Los Angeles and other magazines, Helmut became a close friend whose door was always open to his North American amigos (he spoke fluent Spanish as well as many other languages) since sold the resort but still returns for regular vacations.

Today our charming little getaway is called Viceroy Zihuatanejo. It is still considered one of the most romantic places to stay in Mexico. And they are offering a Valentine’s Day package that sounds dreamily divine. It’s called the Linger Longer Package (buy 3 nights for the price of two for $299) and includes a daily breakfast and two 50 minute massages. The food was always delicious at the hotel and hopefully has remained the same. A special Valentine’s Day dinner sounds inviting and should be for $80 a person.
