An exclusive interview with CKG The Don a Chicago hip hop mega star

I had a wonderful opportunity to finally meet an award winning producer and hip hop artist by the name of Charles K Gillette. Mr. Gillette took the time out of his busy schedule to come down to St. Louis to perform at his manager Damo's Entertainment birthday party, which was part of a weekly series of symposiums we coordinate on Wednesdays.

In which this series (Series 13 March 9) moved to a larger venue to accommodate a host of other entertainers who had come out to support online blogger/artists manager/ music promoter Damo Entertainment.

Rodney: Hello Mr. Gillette, how are you?

CKG: I’M GOOD. A LITTLE TIRED BUT, I’M DOING A LOT SO, THAT’S TO BE EXPECTED….I’M LIVING, GLORY TO GOD! LOL

Rodney: It was so nice to finally meet you. I have heard so much about your music and your accolades that it was a great to see you in St. Louis. So tell me did you enjoy the talent from the party?

CKG: YES I DID. IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO GO TO DIFFERENT PLACES & EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MUSIC.

Rodney: Where are you from?

CKG: I’M FROM THE SOUTHSIDE OF CHICAGO, WILD 100’S. BORN & RAISED.

Rodney: You have remarkable skills, where did you get your start?

CKG: I STARTED WRITING POETRY IN 3RD GRADE. IT PROGRESSED WHEN I SAW EPMD’S, “YOU GOTS TO CHILL” VIDEO IN THE LATE 80’S. ONCE I SAW THAT, I KNEW THAT WAS WHAT I WANTED TO DO.

Rodney: Tell me about the awards and recognitions, especially the one in L.A.?

CKG: OK, WELL, SINCE BEING ON MY “OWN”, I’VE WON A STERLING SOUND EMERGING ARTIST AWARD, I’VE APPEARED IN OZONE MAGAZINE, ON THISIS50.COM, CO-DIRECTED, PRODUCED & I WROTE MY OWN COMEDY TV SHOW PILOT (OBSTACLES), WON AN LA MUSIC AWARD FOR BEST NEW HIP HOP ARTIST OF THE YEAR & MORE.

Rodney: Are you seeing someone special?
CKG: I PLEAD THE 5TH! LOL. ME NO HABLO! LOL

Rodney: Do you have any children?
CKG: NOT THAT I KNOW OF! LOL. WELL, I HAVE SOME “SOUR PATCH KIDS”, BUT THAT’S CANDY….HMMM, KEEP MY PIC OUT OF THE INTERVIEW JUST IN CASE. LOL

Rodney: What would you say to an Independent artist who is working hard to make it in the business? (LOL from last statement)
CKG: I WOULD SAY FAITH IS EVERYTHING! THIS BUSINESS ISN’T REALLY ABOUT TALENT ANYMORE. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS. I’LL ASK UNTIL SOMEONE GETS MAD. THE POINT IS “KNOWLEDGE”. KNOW THE “BUSINESS”, BECAUSE MUSIC IS A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF WHAT REALLY MATTERS.

Rodney: We are mutual acquaintances to online extraordinaire Damo Entertainment tell me how you two met?
CKG: WELL, WE HAVE A MUTUAL BEAUTIFUL FRIEND NAMED “ELIZABETH LANGHAM”, A TALENTED YOUNG WOMAN WHO IS A GREAT SONGWRITER/SINGER/PROMO GURU ETC. SHE INTRODUCED US A WHILE BACK & WE’VE BEEN COOL EVERY SINCE.

Rodney: What were the names of the songs you'd performed Wed night at The Space in St. Louis?
CKG: WELL, I KICKED THINGS OFF WITH “GET ‘EM”, A NEW SONG OFF AN UPCOMING MIXTAPE. WEN’T INTO MY HIT “BUMP BUMP”, THEN TO ANOTHER NEW JOINT ENTITLED “THROW YOUR HANDS”, AND DIDN’T GET A CHANCE TO END IT HOW I WANTED IT, BUT, IT WOULD’VE BEEN WITH “I’M A RIDAH”.
