An Engaging Graphic Novel with a Memorable Protagonist

“Blind Corners,” by Jemir Johnson, is a graphic novel which was created in a retro style, but with a modern touch. Thanks to the minimalist writing techniques used by the author and to the original hip hop noir style, Johnson’s novel is an action-packed crime collection that will keep you glued to the pages.

The protagonist, Jocasta “Jay” Nova, is a unique character. She is a strong woman who guides herself after rules of her own making. Together with her partner, Randy Micheals, she solves the issues of those who are involved in all sorts of shady affairs, the corrupted people of the underworld. Jay’s telepathic abilities are a nice touch to the story, making it even more gripping and complex, while adding an emotional dimension to Jemir Johnson’s work of urban crime fiction.

“Blind Corners” is a collection of four stories – "Street Sweeper," "Cross Pattern," "Down the Line," and "Pressure Point" –, each of them nicely illustrated. Jocasta "Jay" Nova and her partner’s adventures begin in “Street Sweeper,” being hired to find Nia, an underworld entrepreneur’s estranged daughter. It is in this first part of the story collection that we learn about Jay’s special abilities. For her, telepathy is both a blessing – greatly helping her in accomplishing her missions – and a curse – she can’t predict when her telepathic abilities will be triggered.

In "Cross Pattern," an underworld czar named Cavario Dominguez is in conflict with an El Salvadoran gang. Dominguez, the gang members and their ally, the Puppetmaster, are targeted by FBI. Jay and Randy have to rescue Octavio, a little boy kidnapped and used by the villains in their schemes. "Down the Line," the third story, revolves around Tamia, former member of a team of street hustlers, who takes part in a smuggling racket. When the deal goes wrong, Jay and Randy intervene, rescuing Tamia from an assassination attempt. In the fourth and last story, "Pressure Point," our duo is hired by a Mob leader who wants to retrieve a videotape on which he had been caught in a compromising position – a sexual encounter with a top-ranking boss' gay son.

“Blind Corners” is the perfect read for all fans of the graphic novel, bringing together gripping stories, memorable characters, great illustrations, and a unique style. You may find “Blind Corners” on Amazon.
