An electric Toyota laps the Nurburgring at 7.47 seconds?

Yes, you read that correctly, but let me explain.

The gist is Toyota is probably not known for its performance but more for its capacity to churn your everyday reliable car out of factories.  Yes, Lexus has done remarkably well and even challenged Mercedes and in some instance, it has also stunned the world with its flat out outrageous LFA series.  Still, Toyota has been racing cars since the 60s and an electric setting a record at the Nurburgring should not be too surprising.

Technically Speaking.  The project gathered TMG, Toyota Motorsport GmBh from Germany, with Rational Motion, known for its hybrid and electric drivetrains, as well as Evo Electric for the electric motors and Aguti for the seats.  All were coordinated with engineers working once in F1.  So what does all this give you?  375 HP with two electric motors and a gigantic torque of 590 ft lb.  0 to 60 is reached in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of shy of 162 mph.  The chassis is based on a Radical type and hosts a ceramic lithium battery weighing at close to 772 lbs, rated at 520 volts for 41,5 kWh.

What does it look like driving this beast down the twisties of the Nurburgring?  Have a look below.

Before you get your hopes too high, this is not a production vehicle, nor will it be.  It's a project that tests the feasibility of electric vehicle, EV racing.  Lapping in a 7:47, I'd say this is very well done.

Nick's first car recollection at 6 years old was the back of a Bugatti 37A. After having driven an AC Propulsion eBox, it was clear where the future of the automobile was, the electric drive.
