An early look at Pairwise for the 2013-14 season

See also

With just over one half of the 2013-14 hockey season complete, this column will start to give you an idea of the Pairwise rankings and how they are taking shape. We’ll start simple before we get into truly predicting the NCAA Tournament bracket in the coming weeks.
As you know, the five conference champions and eleven at-large bids make up the NCAA field and looking at the current Pairwise rankings, the five conference champions see Mercyhurst, St. Cloud State, Minnesota, Quinnipiac, and Boston College.
All but Mercyhurst are in the top sixteen, so that means Notre Dame would currently be the first team out. Mercyhurst would get an automatic bid if they win Atlantic Hockey, thereby displacing the Fighting Irish.

Here's the current Pairwise:

1 Minnesota
2 Boston College
3 Ferris State
4 Quinnipiac
5 St Cloud State
6 Union
7 Northeastern
8 Providence
9 UMass-Lowell
10 Wisconsin
11 Cornell
12 Yale
13 New Hampshire
14 Clarkson
15 Michigan
16 Notre Dame

Here's the updated version if we swap Mercyhurst for Notre Dame as indicated above:

1 Minnesota
2 Boston College
3 Ferris State
4 Quinnipiac
5 St Cloud State
6 Union
7 Northeastern
8 Providence
9 UMass-Lowell
10 Wisconsin
11 Cornell
12 Yale
13 New Hampshire
14 Clarkson
15 Michigan
16 Mercyhurst

We’ll have a better look at how the predicted regionals set up in a series of Bracketology columns as we get closer to the tournament. (Data gathered from USCHO.com.)
