Yesterday, a panel of voters for AnnArbor.com tabbed Ohio State's Evan Turner as the frontrunner for college basketball's National Player of the Year Award. For anyone who has been watching college hoops over the past month, this hardly comes as a surprise. Turner has literally put the Buckeyes on his back and kept them firmly in the mix for a Big Ten regular season title. But with weeks of action left to play, will he be able to hang on? Here's a breakdown of the contenders and their chances of winning:
Evan Turner - Forward - Ohio State - Junior
The Stats: 19.5 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.9 spg, 55.2 FG%, 71.7 FT%, 25.8 3P%
The Skinny: Bar none, Evan Turner has been the most outstanding basketball player in college hoops this season. When you consider the talent around him, the quality of his opponents and the ridiculous numbers he's posting, he should run away with the POY at this rate.
Chances of Winning: 45%
John Wall - Guard - Kentucky - Freshman
The Stats: 17.0 ppg, 6.5 apg, 4.1 rpg, 1.9 spg, 47.0 FG%, 79.4 FT%, 35.3 3P%
The Skinny: Wall's brilliance in the early part of the season basically assured that he'll be in this discussion for the long haul. The only stumbling block, if we want to call it that, is that Kentucky has so many guys capable of going off on any given night that sometimes Wall's numbers look moderate by comparison. He's still right there, though.
Chances of Winning: 26%
Scottie Reynolds - Guard - Villanova - Senior
The Stats: 18.9 ppg, 3.4 apg, 2.8 rpg, 1.7 spg, 48.8 FG%, 82.1 FT%, 40.2 3P%
The Skinny: Reynolds is similar to Sherron Collins when it comes to his leadership qualities. The one difference is that Reynolds usually fills out the boxscore on most nights. When Villanova needs a bucket, this is the guy who gets it. And he's out there doing this every single night against Big East competition. He remains an intriguing sleeper on the off-chance that Wall and Turner slip up.
Chances of Winning: 7%
Wesley Johnson - Forward - Syracuse - Junior
The Stats: 16.0 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.7 bpg, 1.6 spg, 51.5 FG%, 76.3 FT%, 40.0 3P%
The Skinny: Johnson was cruising along at the top for a while, but a rough fall coupled with Evan Turner's emergence really set him back. He will need to close the season with a vengeance to even have a chance at catching Turner and Wall at this point. Although a Syracuse Big East regular season title wouldn't hurt.
Chances of Winning: 6%
DeMarcus Cousins - Center - Kentucky - Freshman
The Stats: 16.0 ppg, 10.3 rpg, 1.7 bpg, 0.9 spg, 54.5 FG%, 63.0 FT%
The Skinny: Kentucky's other freshman, Cousins has been on an absolute tear as of late. There are times when he looks like the most dominant post player in the country. But how on earth is he going to beat out his teammate who's been doing it all season?
Chances of Winning: 6%
Jon Scheyer - Guard - Duke - Senior
The Stats: 19.1 ppg, 5.4 apg, 3.4 rpg, 1.6 spg, 42.7 FG%, 88.8 FT%, 40.6 3P%
The Skinny: Rather miraculously, Scheyer has morphed into one of the most efficient point guards in the country. He managed to do this despite the fact that he's actually more of a shooting guard, and one who shoots roughly 43% from the floor. Duke is too balanced offensively for Scheyer to be a threat here, but he remains the most crucial part of their team.
Chances of Winning: 3%
Greg Monroe - Center - Georgetown - Sophomore
The Stats: 15.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.4 spg, 1.8 bpg, 51.1 FG%, 64.5 FT%
The Skinny: Monroe's work over the past month should get him a few looks for Big East POY, but he's still an extreme longshot for any national recognition. Still, there might not be a better passer over 6'8" in all of college basketball.
Chances of Winning: 2%
Cole Aldrich - Center - Kansas - Junior
The Stats: 11.4 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 3.8 bpg, 55.0 FG%, 70.2 FT%
The Skinny: Wall's brilliance in the early part of the season basically assured that he'll be in the discussion for the long haul. The only stumbling block, if we want to call it that, is that Kentucky doesn't need him to score 20 and dish out eight assists every single night. Wall's candidacy is
Chances of Winning: 2%
Sherron Collins - Guard - Kansas - Senior
The Stats: 15.1 ppg, 4.2 apg, 2.1 rpg, 1.2 spg, 42.4 FG%, 85.1 FT%, 36.5 3P%
The Skinny: The thing with Collins is that the numbers really don't tell the whole story here. This is a guy who acts as an inspirational leader for the No. 1 team in America, and all of those young kids on the Jayhawks defer to Collins when the game is on the line. Unfortunately for his candidacy, Kansas simply has too much depth to need him to go out and score 20 every single night.
Chances of Winning: Less than 1%
Damion James - Forward - Texas - Senior
The Stats: 17.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 1.6 spg, 1.2 bpg, 50.3 FG%, 65.1 FT%, 41.9 3P%
The Skinny: James was once considered a frontrunner, but he and the Longhorns are basically in freefall mode. For as dominant as he looked early in the season, James has fallen off the national radar in a hurry.
Chances of Winning: Less than 1%
Luke Harangody - Forward - Notre Dame - Senior
The Stats: 24.1 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 0.8 bpg, 48.5 FG%, 78.7 FT%, 30.3 3P%
The Skinny: Harangody deserves a mention because of his statistical prowess alone. Sadly, the Irish just aren't good enough to beat Big East competition with regularity, and that's why he's at the bottom of this list. Team success has pretty much derailed Harangody's chances.
Chances of Winning: Less than 1%
Just Missed: Dominique Jones-South Florida, Devan Downey-South Carolina, Aubrey Coleman-Houston, Da'Sean Butler-West Virginia, James Anderson-Oklahoma State, Jacob Pullen-Kansas State, Jimmer Fredette-BYU, Darington Hobson-New Mexico, Ekpe Udoh-Baylor, Jarvis Varnado-Mississippi State
