An adventure in paradise

Meet Marshall Lubin. a semi-retired Chiropractor and author who is sharing his daring adventures.

In his words, “My book, From Boys 2 Men, an Adventure in Paradise, chronicles a serendipitous two-year around the world journey I experienced after high school in the mid sixties.  I am currently working on another book about skydiving and my experiences as a special warfare operator at Seal Team One.  I live in sunny San Diego.”

Marshall discussed their adventurous spirits, “In high school we would visit the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles to watch surfing movies of the great wave riders of the day, we were awed by guys riding 30' waves in the Hawaiian Islands.  That was our motivation for a summer sojourn to the islands.”

He continued, “In 1964 me and 3 other high school surfers flew to Hawaii to spend the summer enjoying the surf of our dreams.  Unfortunately, the surf wasn't what we had hoped for and soon two of us went to Samoa with a letter of introduction to a local family.  We found a job on an inter-island cargo boat that was to carry goods around the South Seas.  However, the real intent of the boat's owners was to load the boat with cargo, send it to sea, and when it sank, with (6) all hands aboard they would collect the insurance money on boat and cargo.  Apparently, the crew was not indispensable.  We abandoned the Isabel Rose in Suva harbor.  In Fiji, we met a 24-year-old American who was sailing around the world.  He invited us to sail his journey with him to New Guinea to collect butterflies for the Pittsburgh Carnegie Museum.  As we continued traveling we experienced a 95 M.P.H. cyclone in Brisbane and a 125 M.P.H. severe hurricane in the North Atlantic during our two-year circumnavigation.”

Their excitement offset any danger.

Marshall explained, “We were overwhelmed by the beauty, strangeness and events in our new surroundings.  Most teenagers are omnipotent, or at least think they are, we seemed to have a celestial hand guiding us during our travels.”

His closing words, “Long ago Mark Twain wrote, ‘In 20 years, when we look back on our lives, we will be more disappointed by the things that we didn't do than by the things we did.’  For most of us that's true, my message, when opportunity knocks, say yes!”
