There was a series of vehicle break-ins recently and a stolen car report in East Greenbush, New York and police have found their man, errr...boy, an 11-year-old. The unidentified youth was arrested Wednesday and accused of breaking into a number of unlocked parked cars, ransacking, then stealing whatever valuables he found. He also stole a Mercury Marquis and went joy riding in it reports YNN News.
When the child came upon the older model large four-door sedan and saw that its owner had actually left the keys inside, he took it for an hour-long spin. The elementary school student drove the car on a couple of interstates and was on a main intersection when a traffic cop saw him peel off when the light changed.
When the officers approached the vehicle and peered in, they noticed that the driver could barely see over the dashboard. The child had reportedly slid down in his seat as if he were trying to hide. When questioned by police, the boy lied and told them that he was with someone else. The policemen did not believe his story, removed the child from the vehicle and took him into custody. The child was charged with criminal possession of stolen property.
Investigators confiscated the stolen goods that the boy had taken from the parked vehicles and were able to return everything to their rightful owners, including the stolen Marquis.
There were no damages to any of the stolen property and no injuries were reported.
The child has been released to his mother and referred to Albany County Family Court, where he will face a future court appearance.
An adult could face more than 20 years in prison combined for all the alleged crimes the youth has committed.
