On Jan. 10, the late Amy Winehouse was put up for a possible prize at the BRIT Awards 2013 when she was nominated for the British Female Solo Artist category.
Others in the category include Bat for Lashes, Emeli Sande, Jessie Ware, and Paloma Faith.
Even though Winehouse passed away in July 2011, her "Lioness: Hidden Treasures" album was released posthumously, thus making the soulful songstress eligible for an award to be given out by the British Phonographic Industry for excellence in music.
This special shout-out for her talent comes on the heels of news surrounding a recent court appearance concerning the world renowned singer. According to British publication The Daily Mail in its Jan. 8 edition, a London court hearing this week entertained testimony about the circumstances surrounding her death, expressly determining how the 27-year-old spent her last night.
Her security guard, who lived in her London home, took the stand to say that the night prior to the Grammy winner's passing was a good one for Winehouse. He reported that the spirited singer was drinking but, in his opinion, not to excess. He said she was enjoying herself, listening to music and watching TV and watching herself on videos on her computer.
Amy's personal protector said he retired at 2:30 a.m. that night, returning at 10 a.m. to discover Winehouse on her bed in a face-down position. Although he thought she was still sleeping, he became concerned when she did not move at all by late afternoon and so he sought assistance.
Paramedics appeared at her residence and Winehouse was pronounced dead on July 23, 2011. In the end, the second inquest about her death agreed with the first inquest: Amy Winehouse died of accidental alcohol poisoning.
Although Winehouse was not represented by her family during this hearing because her dad, Mitch, was upset that the initial 2011 inquest was botched because the coroner at that time was determined to be unqualified for the job, thus making that official probe invalid.
Indeed, Mitch simply did not want his family to endure the ordeal of reliving their loved one's demise once again. However, Amy Winehouse will likely have their support at the BRIT Awards 2013, a happy occasion and one in which this artist will be remembered for her talent. Described as music's biggest night in the UK, the event will be held in London on Feb. 20.
