MUSIC NEWS REVIEW: Amy Winehouse is baaaack.
By Robbie Woliver
Amy Winehouse has seen good days and bad days, but all we really remember are the bad ones: public displays of crazy, off-key drunk performances, an unfortunate marriage, drug and alcohol abuse. Missing teeth. But Winehouse fans, there’s now reason to rejoice—it looks like the Amy Winehouse who stole our hearts four years ago with her Grammy-winning Back to Black album and stunned us with soul-stirring passion is back on the road of sanity and recovery.
On October 5, the beehived singer shocked the 100 patrons of a Camden, North London club, Hawley Arms, ( a scene of previous bad behavior for Ms. Winehouse) when she politely and demurely took the stage, borrowed an acoustic guitar and sang six songs; a cover of the Specials’ “A Message To You, Rudy” and her own “Tears Dry On Their Own.”
The rest were new songs, which the night’s promoter, Izzy Lawrence (this was a fundraiser for Nordorff Robbins Music Therapy Charity) told BBC’s 6 Music that Winehouse was: “Amazing…quite upbeat, quite funky, very soulful. “ Lawrence said, “It sounds great....If those songs are going to be on the new album, it's going to be huge."
Winehouse recently told the press that she has been clean for three years. She recently posed for the November issue of Glamour magazine, featuring her own line of Rizzo/Grease-inspired clothes. The photos were taken by rocker Bryan Adams.
These past few months have been a sort-of coming-out party for the troubled singer, who apparenty has her bad days now far behind her. A healthy looking Winehouse has been making surprise guest appearances. In July, it was with her longtime collaborator Mick Ronson at one of his shows (Winehouse has since engaged in a nasty Twitter war with Ronson, accusing him of stealing the credit for her Back to Black album; a few days later she tweeted "you know I love you" to Ronson). In September, she performed “Valerie” at London’s Jazz Café.
Amy WInehouse was a talent too good to lose, and this is good news.
IN OTHER WORDS: Despite the fact that we lost the death pool, we are thrilled to have her back, healthy and sounding good.
SHE’S ALIVE! SHE’S ALIVE! RATING: 10/10
