Talking to Amy Grant was a gratifying experience. While many performers can come off like politicians, with canned answers for almost every question, Amy Grant really took her time to think about my questions before answering them. First of all, this approach led to many honest and enlightening responses. Secondly, it left me with the feeling she truly respected me.
This interview was for Songfacts.com, which meant we could concentrate on the actual songs, instead of the media circus that oftentimes surrounds Grant. Whether she likes it or not – probably not – Grant is a lightning rod figure. Christians either love her for bringing Christian music to the mainstream, or hate her for the very same reason. However, whether you love her or hate her, you should respect her for her art. She has developed into quite a talented songwriter. She may have started out as Christian music’s little darling, but she is now a mature woman, writing deep songs about what it means to be a middle age woman in the music business.
