On Feb. 15, 2013, Alan Beiler, one of the stars of the Discovery Channel’s “Amish Mafia,” appeared in a New Bloomfield, Pa. courtroom on charges of drug possession and leading law enforcement on a high speed chase through Duncannon in the summer of 2012, reports WHPTV.
Fans of the cable TV show gathered at the courthouse to catch a glimpse of Beiler.
One fan, Colby Helt, told WHPTV, “You know you watch him on TV every week, and find out he’s up here. So you should come up to see what’s he’s up to.”
Others told the local news media outlet that when they heard Beiler was in town, they made plans to show up at the courthouse to see him in person.
Beiler, with his lawyer by his side, reportedly waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
The report notes that Beiler’s possession charge is a felony. Overall, he is charged with over 30 violations, including evading police and driving without operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license.
According to Hollywoodite, Discovery announced late in 2012 that “Amish Mafia” is partially scripted and some scenes have been staged. He was introduced on the show as being the event coordinator for the Lebanon Levi character. The website writes, “By the end of the season premiere, Beiler… is taken to jail and he’s thought of a liability for drawing too much attention…”
