Jolin is concerned that Freeman is making his authority in Paradise very difficult. Now he, Levi and Alvin decide to do away with him; in one way or another. The entire Amish community believes that Freeman is possessed by the devil and legend has it, that by being near him; they too will be possessed. After he pulled a knife on his parents, he was banished from the community, but John insisted on bringing him back from North Dakota.
Jolin has control of Paradise, and does not want him around. Levi will try to get Esther to banish him. Levi plans to get rid of John and Freeman and have Esther all to himself.
Alan Beiler knows that since the hut party incident, Merlin has not been the same. Since he and his sister were shunned, it seems that Alan believes that Merlin is starting to crack. Since he fell from the top of Wayne’s buggy, Wayne knows that he is going through some serious shit. The producers are observing Merlin stuffing clothing into a suitcase, and ask where he is going. Finally, he tells them, South Dakota. He is having a panic attack and has a headache. The notice on the screen read; “Due to circumstances, both on and off camera, it was decided that Merlin needed to seek treatment. Merlin agreed.” He knows that the Amish go there for help, and he can get the help he needs there.
In his absence, Wayne is collecting Merlin’s money, this way he will sustain his family while Merlin is away. Wayne does not seem to care that Merlin did not leave instructions; he just wants what is coming to him. The producer asked Wayne if he was worried about being caught, but he just wants his money and is tired of waiting for it.
In Paradise, Jolin and Caleb spread the word about Freeman and are looking for him. The community believes that he is possessed, and nobody wants him around. The news spreads like wildfire and the community is alerted about Freeman. Everyone is on the lookout for him. Alvin is disappointed that he lost Levi’s trust, and wants to be back in his good graces, but now he must earn his way back, even if he is doing menial tasks for Levi. Levi sends Alvin to get rid of quilts that an English man is selling as Amish quilts.
Jolin and Caleb are going to pay Freeman a visit. They go to Esther’s quilt place, and spray paint a notice that the devil resides there.
Alvin found the quilt seller, and they were machine-made quilts, not real Amish. Alvin poured hog piss all over them, and the man left.
Caleb feels that he does not want to be under Levi’s surveillance all the time. Because he is in the business with Levi, many Amish families do not want their daughters around him; so some sneak out to see him. The girl he is seeing is the daughter of a bishop, so it must be kept quiet.
In Ohio, Wayne is busy at work righting his wrongs, and now he must put his own team together. He is done with Merlin and gathers his group, and his men are tough like him.
When Esther finds the spray-painted sign, she is afraid it will be the end of her business, and goes looking for Levi. When she finds him, she berates him, but he did not do this. She tells him that she is aware of her brother’s possession, but she needs his help, not to hurt her. He tells her that he will take her to the Ascension Day celebration and when people see her with him, it makes it better for her. Once she is seen by the community, she will get what she wants and agrees to go with him.
Merlin is arriving in South Dakota. He wants to be renewed, and this place has been in operation for the last three hundred years. Merlin needs help and hopes to find it there. Merlin is nervous and enters the facility.
Alan was upset that Levi tore down his chicken coop and decided to go before the bishop and tell them exactly what Levi was all about. The crew stayed outside while Alan met with the bishop. He explained about Levi’s outside interests and how Merlin found them in Levi’s trash. Although Alan did not want to do this, by ruining his chicken coop, he was pushed over the edge. The bishop asked Alan if he knew Caleb, who is a member of the Brethren, and not Amish. Alan said he saw Caleb, but does not know him. The bishop agreed that Levi has too many outsiders working for him, and the bishop told Alan to keep an eye on Caleb.
At the Ascension Day celebration, everyone was having fun. They played games, had cookouts and just enjoyed the festivities of the day. They had a pig race, and Jolin got a chance to take bets on what pig would win. Levi showed up with Esther as everyone looked on. Levi shook hands with everyone, and Esther saw that people were treating her differently already, just by being with him. Levi tries to persuade her to get rid of Freeman, knowing John will lose it too, once Freeman is gone.
The producers asked Esther why she just did not tell Levi to send Freeman away? She told them that he would think he was in control if that happened. Esther wants to be in control; not Levi.
Wayne’s tree removal business is booming, but someone came to tell him that a bunch of trees were poisoned. By poisoning trees, it is a way to get revenge on people. The Amish know that trees are vital to them so they do not have to go to the English and purchase their lumber. When trees are poisoned, they must be removed quickly so they do not poison the rest of the forest.
A pervert has been looking in windows of local homes, and Alvin is ready to find him and put an end to his peeping. Alvin found his buggy and blew it up, so he will not be riding around doing this again.
In Mc Cook County, S.D., Merlin is undergoing treatment. They lay hands on a person and work on their nerve endings. Merlin wants nothing but to get better and return home.
As Caleb is out making collections for Levi, the people tell him that they have nothing for him and were told not to pay him. They tell him Levi is vain, and they will not pay anymore. Caleb does not want to use violence, but he is losing his patience.
Esther decided to give up Freeman, and a white van came, put a straight jacket on him and took him away.
Caleb went to Levi to tell him of his findings. Levi gave Caleb orders to get the money, and told him to do his job. He told them that people said Levi was vain; which means he is guilty of the sin of vanity and punishment is forthcoming from the church.
When John found out that Freeman was gone, he blamed Levi and was looking for his gun. Esther admitted that she had no choice, and John started breaking everything in the house. He even told the camera to get out of his house.
