Last night’s episode of "Amish Mafia," a follow-up to the season finale, was titled “Judgment Day.”
This episode gives more truths into the beliefs of these people and how they conduct their daily lives. The Amish wanted to practice their religion in peace and harmony, without distractions from outsiders. Their communities grew among the modern societies of today, still foregoing the conveniences so accustomed to today's civilization.
The Amish Mafia in Lancaster is led by Lebanon Levi. He has been the law and keeper of Amish Aid. Although the bishops run the church, the protection and insurance are taken care of by Levi. Because the Amish do not believe in the police, it is their own who take care of the everyday overseeing of their community.
As other sources of news come to the community, Merlin stated that ABC-News is taking Lebanon Levi’s side over Merlin in an interview about their community. The attention received from these revelations, has brought stalkers to the community and accusations that the people portrayed on the show are not really Amish. When the producers sat with the group to squash the rumors, Levi stated several times that he was born Amish and is, in fact, Amish. Jolin stated that he was Mennonite, not Amish and all along it was known that he was Mennonite. Wayne stated that he was not a fake and truly Amish. Esther knows full well, that consequences of falling out of favor from the Amish church; it sucks.
All the participants who are Amish are listed in the book titled; “Descendants of Christian Fisher” or the Book of Fisher. This book is updated periodically and kept by the families of the community. Your name is put in the book at birth if you are Amish. Those claiming to be Amish must appear in the book or they are not truly Amish.
Law enforcement is known to many of the cast that have records, but agree that they are Amish people who also break the law. However, Discovery Channel agreed to let them speak their minds about how they are being portrayed. Merlin stated that they were glorifying Levi, who is truly a devil. Esther said that they were treating her better this season than last season when she was portrayed like a slut. Levi had to change alliances, but tread lightly because he is always in the shadow of the church.
While Levi was working with Jolin and John, things were going well. When Jolin left Levi’s employ and John was branded a traitor, things started falling apart in the Lancaster community. When Levi brought in new men, he did not know how much trouble it would cause. Caleb was fooling around with the bishop’s daughter. Furthermore, he is not Amish but Brethren. Esther stated that Levi felt that he was above the law, and the church could not touch him. But Levi was wrong, and found out that the church has more power than he does.
At the start of this season, Levi made more alliances with people to make up for losing Jolin and John. He got Crazy Dave out of Amish rehab and had him host a hut party; however, his alcoholic demons still haunted him. Although strictly forbidden, alcohol use is not uncommon among the Amish. BUIs, Buggy Under Influence offenses happen more often than imagined. The horses know their way home, but do not know how to read stop signs and can end in fatalities or severe injuries.
Another disappointment was Levi hooking up with Caleb, who jeopardized Levi’s entire enterprise. When Jolin and Alvin were sent by Levi to knock down Alan’s chicken coop, they took the chickens away and ate very well. Jolin had an agreement with Levi and was granted the town of Paradise. Jolin now considers himself an equal to Levi, but Levi does not agree.
The Schmucker family reigned over Lancaster prior to Levi’s control. Esther, John and Freeman’s father was in command prior to his death. The name used to be revered, but due to the actions of the two brothers, they have lost their status in the community. John had numerous arrests while they filmed the series, but Freeman thought to be possessed by the devil brought fear to the entire community.
Esther attempted to better her family name by aligning herself with Levi. The high cost of her alliance was to rid the family of the two brothers; which Merlin found to be an egregious action.
Alan and Merlin’s attempt to bring Levi down, cost them both dearly. Merlin was the recipient of a bucket of horse manure thrown by Wayne, who felt that Merlin owed him for getting him unshunned. The producers found that the feud ran deeper, when they discovered a love triangle. Merlin stated that Wayne’s girlfriend was like a sister to him, but Wayne said that he took her to dinner while he was at work. To add to the drama; the woman is not Amish. Alan was arrested and swears that Levi was behind it. Footage shows that both Levi and Esther were at the police station the day of Alan’s arrest; though both deny anything to do with his incarceration. Alan swears revenge upon Levi and stated that snitches get stitches. Alan did snitch to the bishop about Levi’s clandestine maple syrup operation, which led to him losing his possessions to auction.
Now for the first time, the cast responds to the posts of the fans:
“Amish people don’t behave that way.” Levi, Merlin and Esther agree that they do not truly know how Amish people behave.
“If Levi’s Amish how come he doesn’t have a beard?” Levi does not have a beard because he is not married.
“Jolin’s not a real fighter. I could kick his ass.” There are plenty of people who could kick my ass on a keyboard.
“Merlin is a lousy actor.” Thanks for saying I’m a lousy actor, because I’m not an actor!
“It’s fake because Amish are peaceful.” Levi stated that if they were so peaceful, then why is there so much stuff going on? Esther stated that it was very insulting that they put themselves out there the way they do, only to be slapped in the face by people accusing them of being fake. It is annoying and she is sick of hearing it.
This year Amish Mafia tore back the curtain on psychological disorders in the Amish community. As stated by Dr. Jean Cirillo, a psychologist, she said that the community was faced with intermarrying and bringing out the same genes from generation to generation, there are bound to be disorders that recur. These also tend to continue to resurface with the weakest genes in the bloodline.
When Merlin felt that he was losing his grip; he checked himself into an Amish healing center. He now feels better and is in control and ready to take charge of his community again. However, the Amish only whisper about the treatment that is given at Amish Rehab. Jolin stated that Amish Rehab was performed by untrained people who will brainwash the victims using the bible. The reasons to be sent to rehab are the conditions the Church frowns upon; like alcohol, drugs, cheating on your wife and being gay. Esther stated that all people in rehab may not have conditions, but someone my just want them out of their way. Esther sent Freeman to Amish Rehab, so she could be with Levi, and it is known that when Levi no longer has use for a person, he calls upon the institutions. There are other ways to handle aggressions, as Wayne did with his bare-knuckled field fight. When the producers asked Wayne if Merlin would agree to a field fight with him, he replied that Merlin was a pussy.
One of the darkest mysteries of this season was the whereabouts of Caleb after he was accosted by Jolin and Alvin. When producers asked Levi, Jolin and Alvin if they knew where Caleb was, they all denied knowing anything and refused to talk about it, even though there is an investigation by the producers.
As for the future; Jolin feels that they are there to help the community. Esther does not plan to share her plan to better her family name with anyone yet. Levi still feels that he is in control of Lancaster and always will be. Wayne believes he is in control of Ohio, and Merlin feels that he never lost control.
In the next season of "Amish Mafia," fans will meet another Amish man named Flip, who is a big hut party promoter who does things that even the English would not approve of. He also is known to the authorities for his criminal record and will be aligning himself with Levi. The Kentucky Amish are on their way to put Levi out of control in Lancaster, and Alan Beiler will be out of jail and ready to seek revenge against his sworn enemy and fans will be waiting.
