WBA/IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan has once again called out former three weight world champion Erik Morales following the cancellation of Morales' September 17th WBC title bout against Lucas Matthysse.
Reacting to news that Morales vs. Matthysse had been called off, Khan quickly said:
"Hear Morales has no opponent. He has no1 to face so why doesn't he wait till december and we unify all the belts, great idea"
It isn't yet clear what the WBC intend to do with regards to the belt Morales and Matthysse were going to fight for, although a fight between Khan and Morales seems a good option given that most of the other top fighters in the division are either currrently inactive or already have fights booked.
Lucas Matthysse was forced to pull out of the fight earlier this week due to an undisclosed illness forced him to miss several crucial days of training.
As a result currently the Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz pay per view event is missing a strong undercard fight. A rematch between Morales and Marcos Maidana, who narrowly defeated the veteran in April, has been suggested by fans since Maidana's own scheduled title bout against Robert Guerrero was also recently cancelled.
After his five round domination of Zab Judah in July, Khan revealed that he was planning to take one more fight at light welterweight in December, and that following that he would be climbing to welterweight. His eventual goal being a showdown with Floyd Mayweather, presuming that he gets past Victor Ortiz next weekend.
Initially there were several names in the running to face Khan, although the recent favorite named by Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer was Lamont Peterson, the mandatory challenger to Khan's IBF strap.
Interestingly however both Morales and Peterson have turned down the chance to fight Khan in the recent past. Peterson, who at one point negotiated with Khan, walked away over money. Morales was reportedly never interested to begin with given that Khan would be an extremely difficult match up for him stylistically.
Earnie Hallman, Pitt: "Khan destroys Morales, very surprised if this ever happens. Morales just wants his fourth belt before he retires"
