amFAR gala kicks off New York Fashion Week (Photos)

Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and last night amFAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, celebrated its supporters with its annual fundraiser at Cipriani. amFAR was founded in 1985 and has been dedicated to ending the spread of AIDS through its research efforts. amFAR is one of the leading non-profit organizations to lead the effort in raising millions for AIDS research. The gala was started in 1988 to honor those that have dedicated themselves to the mission and to raise money desperately needed for the continued effort of AIDS research.

The fundraiser honored singer/actress Janet Jackson, supermodel/tv personality Heidi Klum & fashion designer Kenneth Cole, ambassadors for amFAR. In December Janet Jackson launched a public service announcement to raise awareness and encourage people to get tested. In continuing that message tonight the honorees had the support of many stars, including Sara Jessica Parker, John Legend and his fiancée Christine Teigen, Cee Loo Green and others. Mayor Bloomberg was also on-hand to cut the ribbon to officially start New York Fashion Week.
