American Express Membership Rewards members who transfer points to Virgin America through Sept. 30, 2013 will receive 40 percent bonus points. For a limited time, the regular transfer ratio of 100 Virgin America points for every 200 Membership Rewards points transferred will increase to 140 Virgin American points.
The number of points required for a flight on Virgin America are variable so we wouldn’t recommend transferring points unless you already have an award in mind. For example, we found flights mid-week between New York and Los Angeles in the Main Cabin for as low as 13,768 Virgin America points. You could transfer 20,000 Membership Rewards points (instead of the regular requirement of 28,000 Membership Rewards points) into 14,000 Virgin America points to have enough points for the roundtrip transcontinental flight.
Or you could look into transferring points to Virgin America and redeeming for a flight on a partner airline, such as Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Australia.
