Long Beach residents have been going to George’s Greek Cafe for years. It’s been a local favorite and an institution on Pine Avenue for what seems like forever. When it moved to its new location closer to Ocean Boulevard, many were worried it would lose its charm. The reality is that the charm at the new location remains, but there is also a significant amount of outside seating.
And the wines are still as intriguing as always!
Monday nights are wine specials, with all wines sold at 50% off their regular price. Which brings us to a specific Greek wine found at George’s and hard to find anywhere else locally. The wine: Amethystos Cava Cabernet Sauvignon.
Amethystos is from Drama, Greece and is predominantly Cab, with a reputation of quality both in Europe and the US.
The nose is redolent of berries, and on the palate there is a smooth chocolate taste. With a strong tannic finish, the wine ends with a lingering spiciness.
This is a wine with a distinct taste. It is not particularly subtle, coming on strong from the initial aromas through the last sip.
And it is just this trait which makes it such a successful pairing with many Greek dishes. It is bold enough to stand up to a variety of Greek dishes, many of which would overpower a more subtle red.
A nice addition to the fact that the wine is good is that it is consistent from year to year. Vintages seem not to affect the taste and quality of the wine.
Normally Amethystos retails at George’s for about $59.00. Monday’s, half off, making it a very good deal!
Have a winederful day!
