America has become a nation of overfed (too many calories) and undernourished (too few nutrients) people. We suffer in large parts from the diseases of affluence (heart disease, diabetes, cancer), which have been linked to our high-fat, high-calorie, low-nutrient diet.
Our busy lifestyles have advanced the accessibility of convenience foods, which in turn have relieved us from the tedious tasks of washing, cutting, and cooking natural foods. This handiness has compromised the nutritional quality of our food; prepared foods are just not as nutritious as their unprocessed counterparts. Baked potatoes have been substituted with French fries and apples have been substituted with fruit snacks. Wholesome home-cooked meals have been substituted with fatty, salty fast-food meals, and this new and not-improved way of life has caused obesity rates to skyrocket. Overweight and obese people are not healthy people.
Get back to the basics of preparing your meals at home. Sure, cooking your own food from the raw ingredients takes time, but consider it an investment in your health and in the health of your family.
