Americans not safe in Yemen despite lavish defense spending

The LA Times reported that a US drone strike killed 4 people in Yemen earlier today. The four individuals are believed to be members of the terrorist group Al Qaeda. However one of the men killed is believed to be a senior Al Qaeda member, Saleh Jouti.

The US government has issued a warning that Americans are no longer safe in certain parts of the world due to Al Qaeda heightened chattered. The US intercepted a call between Ayman al-Zawahri and his counterparts in Yemen. Ayman al-Zawahri took over as leader of Al Qaeda after the death of Osama bin Laden.

Travel warnings have been issued for Americans residing in Yemen. All Americans are strongly advised to leave Yemen immediately.

Defense Spending

The United States spends more on military and defense than the next 10 - 15 countries combined.

It’s easy to understand this cost when one realizes that the United States has over 1,000 military installations around the world. Of course occupying the world is quite costly for the American taxpayers, and contributes to the growing national debt.

Yet all this spending and occupation did nothing to stop the 911 attack. All this spending and occupation did not stop the terrorist attack in Benghazi, and now Americans are being evacuated from Yemen.

It goes without saying that the United States must employ a strong defense. But is it a wise decision to continue spending such a great deal of money on outdated tours of duty?

With today’s advanced technology and sophisticated weaponry, is it necessary for the United States to occupy the world, at the expense of the US taxpayers and a growing mountain of debt?
