Why anyone would agree to buy a milk product that contains aspartame may puzzle most consumers. However, soon shoppers in the United States may be buying milk that contains aspartame although no one will be required to show this on a label.
If consumers don’t know if the milk they are buying contains aspartame, would they want to give that milk to their children? Some consumers questioned by this writer were appalled at the thought that milk can be sold without all ingredients listed.
On February 20, 2013, the Federal Register included these details:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing that the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have filed a petition requesting that the Agency amend the standard of identity for milk and 17 other dairy products to provide for the use of any safe and suitable sweetener as an optional ingredient. FDA is issuing this notice to request comments, data, and information about the issues presented in the petition.
Readers are offered the opportunity to comment until May 21, 2013. If you do not think it is okay to have additives such as aspartame in milk without a label saying so, think about commenting.
