Several media outlets, including the Huffington Post and LA Times reported that Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk announced that he now supports same sex marriage. Kirk joined Ohio Senator Rob Portman, who recently announced his support (for same sex marriage) after his son informed him that he was gay.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Kirk in 2010 stated that he was in favor of civil unions; but did not support same sex marriage.
The issues of same sex marriage and guns have dominated the headlines for the past 90 days. More and more politicians are going on the record in their support for same sex marriage. According to an ABC News blog; “the issue is no longer who has supported same sex marriage; but who hasn’t.” To date, 53 Senators (including 2 Republicans) have publicly supported same sex marriage.
One Christian called same sex marriage the only issue capable of “garnering bipartisan (political) support.”
Others viewed the issue of gun control as bordering on hypocrisy. Said one Christian:
“By now, I’m sure everyone can quote a Bible scripture about same sex marriage; but what about guns? According to the Holy Bible, vengeance and repayment (for wrong doing) belongs to God. He promised to never leave or forsake me. Now, if I say I own a gun for protection or too take care of myself, aren’t I just as guilty as those who support same sex marriage? The Bible is either written in stone, or open for interpretation and change. We cannot have it both ways.”
One Christian applauded Kirk for being bold enough to change his mind, and challenged other politicians to be willing to break away from (political) party and stand on conviction. “It’s a shame that people speak so freely about marriage; but are MIA when the subject is guns.”
