Despite the spectacular performances by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and Ethiopian distance ace Kenenisa Bekele, Americans were the most prolific medal winners at the 12th World Championships in Athletics that concluded this past Sunday in Berlin
Americans came home with 10 gold medals, 6 silver and 6 bronze for 22 total medals. Jamaica was the second most decorated country with 7 gold medals and a total of 13. Russian athletes also earned a total of 13 medals, of which 4 were gold.
A total of 2098 athletes from 202 member nations and territories participated in this 12th edition of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics (Track & Field).
Since its inception in 1983, the US athletes have dominated, with 120 gold medals to 37 for Russia, 31 for Kenya and 28 for Germany. The former Soviet Union won 22, so that the combined Russian/Soviet Union numbers are higher than reflect individually. Three world records were set during this Championships, two by Jamaican Usain Bolt in the men's 100 meter and 200 meter races. Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland set a new world record in the women's hammer throw.
The United States has yet to host a World Championships and is not scheduled for either of the next two. The next (13th) edition of the World Championships in Athletics will be held in Daegu, South Korea, in 2011. The 14th edition will be held in Moscow, Russia, in 2013.
