Announced today, September 19 by the Americana Music Association, the 12th Annual Honors and Awards given by the association, were held at the Ryman Auditorium to a sold-out crowd on September 18, 2013. The ceremony has become a heralded and respected staple amongst music's peers. Lifetime achievement honors were given to Duane Eddy, Dr. John, Robert Hunter, and label executive, Chris Strachwitz. Memorable performances were given as well, including Stephen Stills and Robert Thompson, and newcomers to the scene, John Fullbright and The Milk Carton Kids.
Well-renowned and respected living legends, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, took home Duo of the Year, Album of the Year for Old Yellow Moon, and gave an incredible performance of Crowell's penned single for Harris in 1978, "Leaving Louisiana in Broad Daylight."
Another of the many highlights of the evening was the Charleston, South Carolina husband-and-wife duo, Shovels & Rope, who received Emerging Artist of the Year, including Song of the Year for their reflective single, "Birmingham," pulled from their debut O Be Joyful. These awards were given out by Nicki Bluhm and Sam Bush, including John Stirrat and Pat Sansone of Wilco and The Autumn Defense announced Emerging Artist.
Longtime fan and colleague favorite, Dwight Yoakam, garnered Artist of the Year, presented by Langhorne Slim and The Civil Wars' Joy Williams. Other winners included Larry Campbell, who was named Instrumentalist of the Year, with Old Crow Medicine Show receiving Trailblazer Award. Actor Ed Helms (The Hangover), who is also a musician and founder of The Bluegrass Situation, presented the award to Old Crow Medicine Show. Musician Ry Cooder presented the Lifetime Achievement for Executive Award to Chris Strachwitz, who is the producer and founder of roots-music label Arhoolie Records.
"We might very well not be here, as a genre and as an association, were it not for Emmy and Rodney," said Jed Hilly, Executive Director of the Americana Music Association. "That we are celebrating them tonight not for the work they did 35 years ago, but for the work they did this year, on the same show that we're awarding another duo that is only on its first album, speaks volumes about where we're headed. What an amazing night."
The Americana Music Awards & Honors also had other exciting key musicians and actors, that performed and presented at the ceremony. They included performances from the rockin' and jivin' JD McPherson, Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison, The Milk Carton Kids, and many more. The awards, brought by Nissan, aired live on AXS TV, NPR.org, Sirius XM's "Outlaw Country," and WSM. The ceremony will be re-aired on Austin City Limits for an edited special November 23.
