A meeting for all families interested in learning more about American Youth Leadership Institute programs will be held in the meeting room of the Montrose Regional Library at 7:15 p.m. on February 22, George Washington's birthday. Two of the leaders of the AYLI program in Cedaredge will be giving a presentation and answering questions. Since the fall of 2011, a number of young people have been making the weekly commute from Montrose to Cedaredge in order to participate in the Liberty Girls, Knights of Freedom and Statesmanship Club activities held there. The purpose of this meeting is to consider the possibility of forming a an AYLI chapter in the Montrose area.
The mission of AYLI is to inspire and teach a liber generation of leaders who have a love for God, country, community and family. The Institute has programs for youth from ages 5 - 18, which incorporate the Thomas Jefferson Education model of mentoring and leadership education. Younger children read about the Founding Fathers, learn pioneer crafts, give short presentations, and build their love of learning. Teens in the Statesmanship Club learn about and give different kinds of speeches, study parliamentary proceedure, participate in a mock trial and take part in the Freedom Bowl. The Institute also makes training available for parents and club leaders.
The young people involved in the AYLI activities this past year have done everything from preparing an elk hide for tanning to making bread to learning about jury selection. Having an AYLI chapter in Montrose would enable the two groups to work together, which would be especially helpful during mock trial presentations and the Freedom Bowl.
Anyone interested in learning more about the AYLI program is invited to attend the meeting or call Liz Ackerman at 970.249.1033. At present, only homeschoolers are involved, but if there is enough interest, meetings could be scheduled for after school hours.
