Elementary and middle school students had an opportunity to have fun while at the same time learning about the Founding Fathers and the importance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights at a Freedom Camp held in December 2013.
The idea for the Freedom Camp came from a former middle school math teacher when she learned that the schools are not teaching students about America’s national heritage and that “patriotism” has become a dirty word for too many educators.
Donna Bennett and two other former teachers, Coleen Avery and Frank Tischer have created a “Freedom Camp” that is designed to be a quick and fun-filled way of teaching children about their American heritage.
According to an interview with Ben Velderman of EAGNews the teachers think that
This is a movement—but it’s not that radical of a movement. We are just getting back to basics.
Bennett went on to say that
…Kids need American heroes….
And quotes Abraham Lincoln
The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.
The concept of “one nation under God” will teach the students about how faith has shaped the American people although no specific religion will be included.
One of the concerns of Bennett and the other teachers is that Common Core has cast aside the time-honored approaches to math instruction creating confusion on the part of students as well as a dislike of math.
Some of the subjects that will be taught at Freedom Camp will be math, penmanship, and goal setting. The curriculum is available at Freedom Teachers.
