Meet the American Pit Bull Terrier, better known as a Pit Bull.

These dogs are among the most intelligent, loyal and protective breeds in the U.S. Despite the excess of bad press these dogs receive, they are wonderful family pets.

Like any breed, the pit bull needs to receive training from puppy-hood in order to make a reliable and trusted member of any family. While pit bulls were originally bred as fighting dogs in Europe, they have a sweet and loving demeanor until trained otherwise.

Pit Bulls were considered "America's Sweetheart Breed". Owned and loved by influential and memorable people such as Theodore Roosevelt, Hellen Keller and Laura Ingles Wilder. They've always made wonderful working animals and still do. In World War 1, Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes were taken into battle. Today they are employed with police departments, search and rescue, therapy dogs and livestock workers.

While its undeniable that people today buy and breed Pit Bulls solely for fighting purposes, this breed is much loved within the rescue communities that exist throughout the U.S. Thousands of people work daily to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home these wonderful dogs. If you’re interested in learning more about this breed or in adopting one into your home, look up Pit Bull Rescues and begin your journey into the wonders of the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Pit Bulls are sooo misunderstood, any breed of dog will bite, I would trust a Pit Bull before most humans. Dogs are only what you make of them. Pit Bulls are not born mean they are made mean, just as any breed can be. Human beings have made these dogs to have the bad rapor not the Pit Bull themselves. They are forced to become mean "Just ask Vic" jack ass that he is!! People are misinformed and stupid to believe one tale after another. Wake up people stop believing in fairytales!!! The Pit Bulls are not harmful its YOU that make them this way due to your ignorance and lack of inteligence. I am all for the beautiful Pit Bulls in the world.

I had many dogs in my life and growing up my first dog was a a pomerianien and then a pitbull. they were play mates. Now that I am older. I rescue older dogs. I have a 6 year old American staffodshire terrior named sophia and a German rotty named Boss. They are the most loyal and care free dogs Ive had, They are very spoiled and go everywhere with me. I believe people need to look at dogs as part of their family, not as a toy they get bored with. I have never been bit by any of my dogs, nor did anyone else. They want to be loved, and cared for. It makes me sad that people will ignore my dogs and judge them by their looks, even if they are just laying down and not bothering anyone. I guess the media brain washes people, they can't see the bigger picture.

I always have been intrigued by this breed. They can be quite nice and also quite aggressive. I guess they have their personalities no matter how you raise them. They are definitely not like a yorkie or the toy dog breeds. Gotta love em though.

You have to admit, they are more aggressive than some other breeds of dogs (compare it to a cavachon , let's say). I just remember growing up in KC and our neighbor's chasing us into our own house from our own yard. There was no reason for it, she was just a mean dog. Her owners weren't all that nice, either....

The Pit Bull might be more harmless than we think, but I would still rather buy a cavachon from http://www.cavachonsbydesign.com than to own one. I had a bad experience with a Pit Bull once, but I think I can blame that on its owners....
