American Library Association Hires Sarah Ostman

The American Library Association (A.L.A.) announced on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 that Sarah Ostman joined the staff of the A.L.A. Public Programs Office (P.P.O.) as Communications Manager on Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Among Ms. Ostman’s responsibilities are managing and editing the Web site and newsletter, managing social media, and handling media and communications needs for P.P.O. grant projects, including the Libraries Transforming Communities (L.T.C.) initiative.

Ms. Ostman comes to the Chicago-based A.L.A. from Northwestern University, where she served as a communications writer and editor for Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. Previously, she worked as a journalist in Chicago and California, with assignments that included covering the Rod Blagojevich trial for the Chicago Sun-Times. She received a B.A. in sociology and theatre from Smith College and an M.A. in journalism from Columbia College Chicago.

According to the ALA, “The ALA Public Programs Office promotes cultural and community programming as an essential part of library service. Through professional development activities, programming resources, model programs and grant opportunities, PPO supports libraries as they fill their role as community cultural centers and places of cultural and civic engagement, where people of all backgrounds gather for reflection, discovery, participation and growth.”
