'American Idol' winner Martha Heredia arrested for smuggling heroin

Martha Heredia, 'American Idol' winner from the season in 2009 was arrested on Sunday in the Dominican Republic before boarding a plane, for trying to smuggle 2.9 pounds of heroin in the heels of her shoes.

Officials say the 22-year-old is being interrogated as police determine if she is a part of a much larger drug trafficking organization.

The Dominican prosecutor who is in charge of the investigation released a statement:

"It's very sad that young people who have so much promise, who were bestowed by life with all the grace in the world and an unquestionable talent, because of ambition, bad advice or simply to obtain money see themselves in situations like this."

Last month the young star had her husband thrown in prison for domestic violence charges, and she could soon be joining him if she is convicted facing up to 10 years in prison.
