One of the things that made American Idol so much fun this year was Adam Lambert, and I mean that in every possible way, shape, and form. Lambert was a rare performer in the way he galvanized the audience, people loved him or hated him. One way or the other, his overly theatrical performances got your attention.
Even now that the series is over, people are still talking more about Adam and his future than the other Idols. When Adam releases his first album, what it sounds like will be a surprise to everyone. The range he showed on Idol was really only a fraction of what he's done in the past. His first album could be anything from emo to lounge to hair metal to Broadway. He's got a range that allows him to do anything.
Here's Adam and Noa Dori performing David Foster's "The Prayer."
Here's a pre-Idol Adam at the Upright Cafe, performing Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me."
Adam's outdated bio at the Upright Cafe's website lists his breakout role as playing opposite Val Kilmer in "The Ten Commandments." He might have some new resume material at this point. (Adam, not Val Kilmer.) Here's him performing "Come Home."

Comments
Given that Adam can make even a hot mess like DioGuardi's "No Boundaries" sound great, he can make just about any kind of record he wants.
Adam is a true star with one of the most beautiful voices ever!
I agree, "No Boundaries" wasn't that good but he pulled it off, of course nothing can beat Mad World and his performance of it at the finale of Idol.
I cried when I heard him sing the Sam Cook song, what a beautiful man and what a beautiful voice!
Adam made American Idol interesting. He was different. He has a beautiful voice and stage presents. It also helps that he is mega handsome! I think he's great,I'm a Hugh fan and I Can't wait for the release of his album.
Adam was one of the reasons I kept watching the American Idol. He has the powerful voice in every possible way. He will actually have a bigger and brighter future than the ones who got the title.
It's too bad that this video wasn't released earlier. A lot of people were turned off by Adam because they feared he might be gay and liked the "faith" of Danny and Kris.
Adam Lambert is a truly unique, exciting and gifted singer - and probably a darn good actor too. I can't get enough of him.
Thank you for posting these....I watched these on youtube over and over. My fave's are Come home, I can't make you love me, and Crazy - but really I love anything he does I can't stop listening to him. He is so talented and has such a wonderful voice. Everyone thinks he is this Rockstar type - he can do that yes but really I think Adam Lambert is quite versatile and in a category of his own. He truly can do anything - although he can do Rock wonderfully I think his style is more updated than
people think and he will lure all ages. My seven year old loves him.
I'm sure no matter what direction Adam goes on his album, it will be awesome!
He is so gifted and beautiful... a legend in the making.
I appreciate the comments, everybody. For the first time in a while, I'm actually excited to hear what an Idol contestant will do next. Whatever genre he plans to record for his first album, I'll give it a try. No slight to Kris, I'll probably buy his album too, but we already know what that will sound like.
Adam not winning Idol was ridiculous!!! He is so amazing that I will buy every song he sings and go to any concert he gives. He will be an international STAR!
SEE IF YOU CAN GET THE 2008 FINALE ON CD for $19.95 _it was AWESOME and EMMY WORTHY! Without an "Adam" next season, Idol will be again_Boring!
CLAY AIKEN is Dissing Adam...JEALOUS ARE WE!:(
Visit Adam's myspace page at adamlambertmusic and listen to "No Boundaries" It's amazing and it's available on iTunes.
I think Adam can sing anything and I hope his album will be a mix of rock, pop, and ballads because he sounds great doing all of those and I love his theatrics when he's singing rock ("Beth" was awesome, too). He's really hot.
Adam Lambert - World Idol! What an amazing talent he has and he was the only reason I tuned in to American Idol every week this season. He definitely carried the show on the final night which made it glaringly obvious that he is miles above the rest, including some of the professionals! No matter what he sounds like after Idol, I will be buying it. Somebody like Adam doesn't come along very often, his talent is off the charts, he feels comfortable in his own skin, yet he is humble and polite - a
I am not going to watch Idol or go the the Idol on tour for the first time ever. For Adam to have not won made the entire season meaningless to me personally. He was so far more talented than everyone else, it was astounding. It became a polularity contest and had NOTHING to do with talent in the end. I am done with it.
I am so happy to read all of these wonderful comments about Adam. I agree with them all. I only wish he could read them and know how much we all appreciated his amazing talent and classy manner.
I've watched/listened to these many times; they are completely addictive, just like Adam. It tears my heart out that he has had to struggle like he has. Believe me, as a writer who has toiled for years, I get that the entertainment business can be incredibly arbitrary. Still, when you see examples such as this, it is so difficult to reconcile why some people break through while others kill themselves and don't get a chance.
How could this otherworldly talent and gorgeous, gifted soul not be r
(continued - if there was a length limit, why is that not communicated?) ... recognized. I think what Adam creates now will transcend mere genres and redefine world music today, both recorded and performance. He's going stratosphere.
It is very disappointed to see that America did not give Adam the title he deserves by his talent. His songs moved me. More than that, by reading these comments and watching the videos, you can find how much he has put his heart to singing. Although it is said that music has no language barrier, with English not being my mother tougue it takes more than just singing good to make me addict to the songs....Mad World, If I Can't Have You.... Yet, I love most of the songs Adam sang on the American i
Ditto to all of the above. I loved the reference to World Idol because that's what he is.
I love old school rock from the 70's and 80s. after his first performance i turned to my wife and said,"this guy adam is as good a singer as fredie mercury and robert plant." Then he proved it by singing their songs with that over the top vocal perfection. i stand by my words, and look forward to adam taking music to the next level
I love this article, and how you've shown the full range of Adam Lambert! I agree his CD should show his incredible ability and diversity in music. He is a beautiful person, for sure, and I have been so excited with finding this wonderful new artist and example of soulfulness, excitement, and humanity.
Unless he dumps the shock rocker image, he will be another flash in the pan of 15 minutes of fame. Kris had more over-all talent, playing piano and guitar.
Adam's stage personae is a distraction, if anything, and will go much further as soon as he realizes it.
Adam is a TRUE STAR and will be popular for YEARS to come!
And what SINGING competition has to do with playing musical instruments? Now I understand why Nibel Lithoe was against letting the contestants using the instruments.
Btw Kris "playing" the instruments is rather rudimantary and nothing to write home about and sorry his singing is fine, but just nothing extraordinary. Adam on the other hand is absolutely truly amezing and somehting or a real rarety.
Adam, be true to yourself an
YOUR'RE RIGHT BETSY ROSS...why be a 15 minute "Flash in the Pan" like hmmm, maybe KISS -or- QUEEN!?! FREDDY MERCURY and GENE SIMMONS are "Flash in the Pans" _for sure!
--NOBODY KNOWS WHO THEY ARE! lol :-(
