‘American Idol’ tops ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in Emmy nominations

The 2011 Emmy Award nominations were announced live this morning and after all the nominations were tallied, American Idol topped Dancing with the Stars in 2011. American Idol on FOX pulled in an impressive ten nominations, with Dancing With the Stars and The Amazing Race tying for second place with seven noms each.

In the heated Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program, newcomer Cat Deeley from So You Think You Can Dance joined the list of usual favorites. Jeff Probst has won in the past, so it would be nice to see a win for Tom Bergeron, Ryan Seacrest or Phil Koeghan. Below are the Outstanding Reality Host nominees for 2011:

  • Cat Deeley – So You Think You Can Dance
  • Phil Koeghan – The Amazing Race
  • Jeff Probst – Survivor: Redemption Island
  • Ryan Seacrest – American Idol

In the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category, there are no surprises, like last year’s win by Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. Before that, The Amazing Race won in 2003-2009. Could American Idol or Dancing with the Stars have a shot this year? It was a big season on Idol with the addition of two new judges and a jazzed up format. Its chances are better than ever for an Emmy win, especially since last year’s upset blazed the trail for new winners. Below are the nominees for 2011:

  • The Amazing Race
  • American Idol
  • Dancing with the Stars
  • Project Runway
  • So You Think You Can Dance
  • Top Chef

With ten nominations for American Idol and seven for Dancing with the Stars, it could be their year to snag a major win. Mark Ballas received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Choreography for his Viennese Waltz with Chelsea Kane to the Harry Potter theme song. Ryan Seacrest, who is in Philadelphia today to open a recording studio at a children’s hospital reacted to his nomination by tweeting…

Excited as always for my Emmy nom. Also congrats/welcome to Cat Deeley and the usual suspects Jeff Probst, Phil Koeghan and Tom Bergeron.
