"American Idol: Season 13" is only a couple of weeks into their live shows and already what started out as The Top 13 is now down to The Top 12. Wild Card contestant Kristin O'Connor left last week.
On tonight's Top 12 Performance Show, the theme was "Home" where the contestants chose songs that made them think of their homes and their home towns. The catalog of songs tonight hit all genres from gospel to traditional country. It was a good night, not a great night or a memorable night.
Most of the contestants were nervous. Some seemed nervous about their live performance. Others, after hearing the judges' (Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban) brutally honest critiques, became worried about what the judges might say about them. All in all, if the contestants would get out of their heads and focus getting the vocals down, the rest will come.
Here's a recap of the night:
Jena -- Song: "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall
Nutshell critique: The judges liked the song and her voice but thought she could loosen up more.
Alex -- Song: "I Don't Wanna Be" by Gavin DeGraw
Nutshell critique: The trio felt the performance was unstable and liked that he tried to change it up but didn't like the arrangement.
Jessica -- Song: "White Flag" by Dido
Nutshell critique: Her performance was sharp but if she put more emotion into the performance, the pitch problems wouldn't be much of an issue.
Dexter -- Song: "Lucky Man" by Montgomery Gentry
Nutshell critique: Thought it was the best of the night so far. It was the perfect song choice for him.
Emily -- Song: "Let's Get Loud" by Jennifer Lopez
Nutshell critique: One "loved" it, one "liked it" and the other thought the song was too big for her.
Caleb -- Song: "Working Man" by Rush
Nutshell critique: He's consistent in his vocal performances but worries that he is too predictable.
MK -- Song: "Drops of Jupiter" by Train
Nutshell critique: They feel she needs to connect with the lyrics for a more emotional performance and question if she really wants to be here. "
C.J. -- Song: "Waiting on the World to Change" by John Mayer
Nutshell critique: The judges liked it but want to here more from him and not just a cover version of the song.
Sam -- Song: "Just One" by Blind Pilot
Nutshell critique: The judges would like to see him get out of his comfort zone.
Malaya -- Song: "Take Me to the King" by Tamela Mann
Nutshell critique: They like her power and range and the fact that she went back to playing the piano.
Ben -- Song: "Turning Home" by David Nail
Nutshell critique: They felt it was just okay, it wasn't great.
Majesty -- Song: "Fix You" by Coldplay
Nutshell critique: The judges felt it didn't work and they wished that she would has stayed in the quiet part of the song.
The show ends with a cute little "recap" taped piece with the Idols playing with the cutouts of their numbers to remind people to vote by text or phone. Too bad that the show messes that up by not showing or having host Ryan Seacrest announce what the numbers are. At the end of two hours, no one really remembers what they are.
Who got your vote and who do you think is going home? Find out tonight.
Tune in to "American Idol" on Wednesdays and Thursdays on FOX.
