'American Idol:' the competition heads to Dallas

"American Idol" went to my hometown of Dallas on Wednesday night, and the results were great even if the episode itself was a little bit of a yawner.

Why? Neil Patrick Harris made for a great guest judge, but after he stopped disagreeing with Simon the action stopped. We also had a round of contestants that were good, but not necessarily amazing. Part of the problem may simply be that we're so far in now that the audition episodes are getting a little tired out.

Julie Kevelighan: Julie doesn't give up, I will give her that. The girl tried out and failed the first season, and tried and failed again. Why on earth do these people keep singing after the judges say "no?" They think that talent will miraculously come to them.

Lloyd Thomas: Lloyd had a tough life in the projects, but he overcame that to give a great audition. He may be a little cocky, but those contestants are always the most fun.

Kimberly Carver: the moment she said she wanted to sing an original song, I pretty much thought that she was going to stink. However, she had a really voice that would be great for jazz music (yes, Simon, you are right on at least that).

Dexter Warren: Dexter said to "stop the competition" since he was going to be the winner. The judges egged this guy on for some reason, and I'm not sure how they managed to keep themselves from laughing.

Erica Rhodes: Introducing "whip girl!" The girl was a former kid star from "Barney and Friends," which is filmed at a studio in the Dallas area. I don't actually think she was the best singer I've seen, but her crazy personality (plus the whip) got her through.

Dave Pittman: As someone with Turrets syndrome, Dave probably has had one of toughest roads of anyone I've ever seen on the show. He was the last person to make it through on day one, and he celebrated with the typical hugging the family / going nuts.

(Joe Jonas then took over as the guest judge -- while he certainly got the attention of the ladies, I don't understand why he kept saying "yeah" instead of "yes." He also said next to nothing the entire second half of the episode.)

Todrick Hall: All right, his song was a little corny...but it was cute. (On another note, the guy has $300 jeans?) Todrick already has a history of performing with Fantasia in "The Color Purple," so he has the sort of experience needed to go far.

Stephanie Daulong: This girl sounds a ton like Shakira...just sayin'. We only saw about eight second of her.

Meaghan Wright: Meaghan picked an interesting song, one that is typically sung by a man. She was Cara's "favorite of the day," and the Richardson, Texas native is going on.

Vanessa Johnston: She likes pink, and that's about the nicest thing I can say about her. Why did the judges let her sing so long? "At Last" is a tough song to do, and it makes a bad singer sound even worse.

Christian Spears: The final act of the night, Christian was just what we would expect from a "final act of the night." She has a great voice, a touching story as a leukemia survivor, and she could go far.
