On Wednesday, Jan. 16, Fox aired the first episode of the twelfth season of their hit show “American Idol”, as audiences were introduced to a contestant named Frankie Ford.
Growing up in the Flatbrush commnity in Brooklyn, New York, Frankie insists his childhood wasn’t a walk in the park.
“It’s not the easiest place to live,” Frankie would say on the episode. “It’s a tough neighborhood but it made me tough."
Frankie added that his birth mother stopped taking care of him at the age of two because she got caught up in drugs while calling his adoptive mother “his rock”.
Frankie revealed that he was presently singing on subways in order to make money, calling himself a “starving artist”.
“I’m just doing what I can to survive,” he stated.
While performing in front of the judging panel of Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, and Randy Jackson, Frankie chose to sing the hit song “Sweet Dreams” by Eurythmics.
And despite having to start over after a rocky early going, Frankie delivered a solid second act, winning over the judges as they advanced him to the second round in Hollywood.
“I like this kid, I believe in you,” Jackson would admit.
From performing in subways to a trip to Southern California to chase his dreams, Frankie insists he won’t be giving up.
“You don’t have to worry, I’m going to work,” Frankie claimed. “I’m willing to put the time work in, the effort in, whatever it takes. I’ll work 110%. I’m not going to let you guys down.”
